Ben Stokes out for Rajasthan Royals’ entire IPL campaign with broken finger to leave England sweating over talisman
Ben Stokes has been ruled out for the remainder of the IPL season due to a broken finger.
The England superstar will play no further part in Rajasthan Royals’ campaign after sustaining the injury during yesterday’s defeat to Punjab Kings.
Stokes took a superb diving catch in the deep to dismiss West Indies legend Chris Gayle, but grimaced as he rose to his feet.
And now Rajasthan Royals have confirmed reports the all-rounder is out for the season, which runs until the end of May.
A club statement read: “He will stay with the Royals and support the rest of the group in the upcoming matches.”
England will also be sweating on the injury to their talisman ahead of the Sri Lanka Test series, which begins on June 23.
An England and Wales Cricket Board spokesperson said: “We are aware (of Stokes’ injury) and he will be assessed over the coming days on the extent of the seriousness of the injury. At that point we will confirm the next steps.
“In addition, ECB medical and our UK hand specialist consultant are both involved.”
Stokes is widely considered England’s best player following a number of heroic displays in recent years, namely in the Cricket World Cup final and third Ashes Test in 2019.
His form in 2021 has been questionable, although he recently produced a sensational knock of 99 in the second ODI against India.
The 29-year-old is one of the biggest draws in India’s flagship T20 competition and the injury represents a huge loss for the Royals.
