Neil Warnock says he was nervous about handing Middlesbrough youngster Nathan Wood full league debut in hilarious interview
Neil Warnock has joked he was nervous about handing Nathan Wood his full league debut in Middlesbrough’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
Marvin Johnson’s 81st-minute goal moved Boro up to fifth in the Championship table on Saturday.
Wood, 18, impressed in central defence alongside Paddy McNair in his maiden league start in senior football.
In his post-match television interview, Boro boss Warnock quipped: “I said to him [Wood] before the game, ‘were you nervous last night?’ He said, ‘no’.
“I said ‘well I was, thinking about playing you tomorrow, son!’”
Middlesbrough are unbeaten in eight games and have not lost a league match since the opening day of the season.
Warnock was full of praise for Wood, who had made just two substitute league appearances before the Nottingham Forest clash.
He said: “Let’s not get carried away, but it’s a good start. It’s his debut and I can’t fault anything he did.
“It’s nice for him to be playing alongside Paddy in a back four that’s doing really well.
“He just played his own game. That’s what I told him – ‘be normal, play your normal game and don’t take any chances’.
“He’s a smashing lad and that will do him the world of good.”
