Two days before the curtain falls on determining the outcome of the 2020 U.S. election, President Donald Trump again read the lyrics of one of his most visited songs to thousands of supporters attending a “Make America Great Again Victory Rally” in the battleground state of North Carolina on Sunday night.

In a speech that lasted about 40 minutes, Trump read the lyrics to singer-songwriter and civil rights activist Oscar Brown’s “The Snake,” which tells the story of a kind woman who takes in an ailing snake, only to be killed by the venomous creature after she revives it with her love.

The song lyrics read:

On her way to work one morning,
Down the path along side the lake,
A tender hearted woman saw a poor half frozen snake.
His pretty colored skin had been all frosted with the dew,
“Oh well,” she cried, “I’ll take you in and I’ll take care of you.”
“Take me in oh tender woman,
“Take me in, for heaven’s sake,
“Take me in oh tender woman,” sighed the snake.

She wrapped him up all cozy in a curvature of silk,
And then laid him by the fireside with some honey and some milk.
Now she hurried home from work that night as soon as she arrived,
She found that pretty snake she’d taking in had been revived.
“Take me in, oh tender woman,
“Take me in, for heaven’s sake,
“Take me in oh tender woman,” sighed the snake

Now she clutched him to her bosom, “You’re so beautiful,” she cried,
“But if I hadn’t brought you in by now you might have died.”
Now she stroked his pretty skin and then she kissed and held him tight,
But instead of saying thanks, that snake gave her a vicious bite.
“Take me in, oh tender woman,
“Take me in, for heaven’s sake,
“Take me in oh tender woman, ” sighed the snake

“I saved you,” cried that woman,
“And you’ve bit me even, why?
“You know your bite is poisonous and now I’m going to die”
“Oh shut up, silly woman,” said the reptile with a grin.
“You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in.
“Take me in, oh tender woman,
“Take me in, for heaven’s sake,
“Take me in oh tender woman,” sighed the snake.

Trump told the audience in Hickory that he had received a lot of requests for him to read the song.

Trump also referenced the song in his 2016 presidential campaign to illustrate his strict policies against illegal immigration. At the time, two of Brown’s children had asked Trump to stop using their late father’s song in his campaigning, although it appears the president has chosen to continue reciting the lyrics.

“The Snake” was written in 1963. It was released in 1968 by American singer Al Wilson as a single. The lyrics are based on one of Aesop’s fables that illustrates one party unsuspectingly letting in an evildoer and getting hurt as a result.

Trump narrowly won North Carolina in 2016 with 49.8 percent of the vote—just more than former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s 46.2 percent.

The president endorsed Republican Sen. Thom Tillis (N.C.) for reelection. Tillis is being challenged by Democrat Cal Cunningham, who admitted three weeks ago to having an extramarital affair.

Trump left Hickory for another rally in Rome, Georgia, late Sunday night where he said he is already expecting a win but wanted to keep his promise to visit the people.
