Randy Orton captured his 14th world title by defeating Drew McIntyre at Hell in a Cell on Sunday.
The decision to put The Viper over surprised a section of the WWE Universe as he had previously lost to McIntyre twice at SummerSlam and Clash of Champions.
However, Orton beat the Scottish Psychopath with an emphatic RKO to lift the WWE Championship.
Fightful Select claim the WWE roster are ‘confused’ by the timing of Orton’s big victory having suffered those back-to-back pay-per-view defeats.
The Legend Killer is set to face Universal champion Roman Reigns in a huge Survivor Series clash next month.
Orton has put over talent such as AJ Styles, Kofi Kingston, McIntyre and Edge in the past year – and is getting his time at the top now.
While his immediate focus will be on Reigns, fans got an idea of Raw’s future world title contenders.
‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt confronted Orton towards the end of Raw, while the new champ brawled with McIntyre as the show went off air.
The Wrestling Observer claim the plan is for Orton to hold the WWE Championship until WrestleMania 37 where he will face Edge.
The Rated R superstar beat his long-time rival at WrestleMania 36, before losing at BackLash.
He is currently recovering from a torn tricep, but is expected to be back in time for WrestleMania season next year.
